  • From Day Job to Dream Job!
    Transition to Your Dream Job

Should You Transition to Your Dream Job

Can you relate to these scenarios?

    • You work a full-time Day Job, either paid or unpaid, and also work part time at the holistic practice you love, your Dream Job.
    • You are waiting until the income from your Dream Job is steady enough to support you, and then you'll quit your Day Job.
    • You want to start a holistic practice, but you're not 100% sure this is the right time.
    • You know you want to launch your Dream Job, but the details of how you'll survive are pretty sketchy and that's holding you back.
How, exactly, do you make that leap from Day Job to Dream Job?

I made the leap from Day Job to Dream Job almost 3 years ago, and since then I have supported many others considering the same transition. The good news is that you already know the answers; they just may not seem clear to you right now.

I had two big questions when I transitioned from my Day Job as a trainer for the federal government to my Dream Job as a self-employed coach and trainer. The first question was, "Should I?" The second question was "How will I?"

This article focuses on how I chose to answer the question, Should I start my own business? Next month I'll share some excellent tips on How to transition to your Dream Job. (If you can't wait, email me and I'll send you next month's article pronto!)

I'll tell you in hindsight that I spent much more time mulling over whether I should start my business than how I'd start my business. Looking back (always a wonderful perspective), the should I question was a gut call, made in response to where I felt my intuition was leading me. In other words, it just plain felt right. I was no longer happy doing my Day Job, and I wanted something different. But what?

I don't remember where I first heard this great phrase, but to me it captures that in-between world of leaving behind the known and following the beckoning future:

"We'll know we're ready for a change when our current circumstances begin to pinch."

Are you feeling a "pinch" in your current work? I recognized the pinch when I started arriving a few minutes late to work each day, when I counted the hours till the end of my work day, and when I looked at the projects on my to-do list and realized that only one of them was exciting and fun, namely coaching!

I had at least 8 years remaining before my earliest possible retirement, and it seemed like an eternity. While I loved my coworkers and the work environment, I had lost my passion for all but a few of the tasks my employer was paying me to do. I definitely felt the pinch.

At the same time, I was pulled toward a Dream Job that seemed just out of reach. I was also short on details as to what that Dream Job would look like. All I knew was that it fed my passion for coaching and supporting holistic practitioners.

I invite you to answer the Should I question by paying attention to the recurring thoughts and ideas that try to break through to you during the bustle of your daily life. It is my belief that our recurring feelings ARE our passion, trying to get our attention in the midst of our busy lives.

If your thoughts and daydreams keep returning to swapping your Day Job for a Dream Job, then chances are that's your passion talking.

Fortunately for me, I had been working with a coach when the Should I question came up. With her support, I was able to hear my intuition, look past the fear, and summon the courage to act in my own best interest.

So how can you best hear your passion when it speaks to you? Here are a few questions I invite you to mull over:

    • If money was no object, what would you love to do for a living?
    • What do you do best?
    • If you knew you could not fail, what would you attempt?
    • What types of people do you like working with, and how do you like to interact with them?
    • What parts of your current job do you enjoy the most?
If you are considering creating your Dream Job, please join me next month when I will share some simple steps that can save any new business owner time, money, and headaches!

And if you have already committed to creating your own business, congratulations! Increase your chances of success by investing in my Holistic Business Building TeleClass, which starts on January 24th.

Please join me next month, when I'll discuss Your Dream Job - How to Set Yourself Up for Success!
