Do you hear what I hear?
"The greatest gift we can give one another is
rapt attention." 1
As a business owner your lifeblood is your
client base. Yet how often do you "gift" your clients
with rapt attention?
For that matter, how
often do you receive rapt attention? Have you
commented that a new acquaintance is such a great
conversationalist, only to realize later that they are
actually a great listener?
Successful entrepreneurs honor their clients
by practicing active listening. Here are some
tips on how to be a better listener, and hence, a
more successful business person:
Wait at the end of a sentence or flow of
sentences. Is your client through speaking? Really?
What might come to them if you gave them an
additional five seconds to reflect, to hear the words
they just said? This skill is easy sometimes, not so
other times, and is always of value to your client!
Listen for what is NOT being said. Words
left unsaid can be very enlightening. Notice when a
client tap-dances around a question. If appropriate,
ask if this is a topic they wish to examine.
Listen for what seems out of the ordinary in
a client’s words or tone. How your client speaks can
be very revealing. Be willing to check in, and reflect
what you are inferring from their tone, always with
the client’s best interests in mind.
Follow your client’s agenda. This means
putting a temporary hold on your idea for the perfect
solution, and instead following the direction chosen
by your client.
Accept and reinforce your client’s feelings,
perceptions, concerns and beliefs. By doing so you
honor your client as the source for what is best for
them. Be aware of judgment creeping into your tone
or words.
While active listening requires real discipline and
focus, the rewards it brings to your clients and to
you are substantial and invaluable. In a very real
sense it is true - the greatest gift we can give
anyone, is rapt attention.
I invite you to join me each month for an insightful
and fun discussion related to building your business.
Please feel free to forward my e-zine to friends and
colleagues you feel may benefit.
In June I will offer "Five tips to keep your
clients coming back!"
Till next time,
Blessings & Light
