Dear Anne,
Are you happy with your current fees? My
feature article tells you how to set a
price that honors you, and attracts your ideal
clients!
| Are you charging what you are worth? |
 |
|
You already know what your time is worth to
you.
Every day you make dozens of choices that tell the
world the value of your time.
Take this short quiz and consider what it reveals
about how you choose to spend your time. Answer
just for yourself; I assure you, there are no right or
wrong answers.
- When grocery shopping, do you buy pre-sliced
vegetables and mushrooms, or do you slice
your own?
- Do you hire a web professional, or do you
maintain your own website?
- Do you do all of your own administrative
work, or do you pay someone to assist with a portion?
- Do you sometimes stay late at work, above
and beyond your paid hours?
- Do you provide your professional services
to friends and family for free or for reduced fees?
- Do you expect to wait well beyond your
scheduled appointment time for the doctor, the cable
guy, and the dryer repairwoman, and do not complain
when
they are hours late?
When the topic of setting fees was
discussed during my coach accreditation training, I
listened with great anticipation. Looking back, I was
hoping for a magic answer, an exact dollar amount
that would assuage my anxiety while filling my bank
account to the brim.
Instead, the wise trainers offered us a choice.
They assured us that whatever rate we set for our
services, there was a willing and waiting audience
eager to pay that amount. Yes, you read that
correctly. Whether I set my fees very low, at a
moderate level, or very high, there are clients out
there who will
consider me their perfect match.
Let that sink in for a moment. Do you believe it
to be true? What does your experience tell you?
I have the same number of clients today as I did
when my fees were much lower. After coaching for
the
federal government, I was unsure what to charge
when I started my own business. At first I
cautiously
offered an hourly rate that I hoped clients
would find acceptable. The clients who were
attracted to that rate found me (synchronicity?) and
enjoyed the benefits of my service.
Over the next year, my confidence increased
and
I found myself ready to charge professional fees that
better honored the value of my time. Lo and
behold, each
subsequent client made a decision as to whether my
fees were reasonable. Some decided yes, others
no. Yet my number of clients remained constant!
Some additional thoughts on setting fees:
- Practice your pricing speech in detail, preferably
with your coach. Yes, the words tumble out rough
the first few times, but, believe me, it gets
easier.
- Ask your current clients to respect the
confidentiality of your pricing. This allows you some
flexibility in setting your fees.
- Do not feel you must publish your prices.
Consider
an enticing, results-oriented description of the
benefits you provide, followed by an invitation to
contact you for further information.
- If a prospective client cannot afford your primary
service, do you have a menu of services on a sliding
scale? This is called a funnel approach to
bringing
clients on board and will be the topic of my October
e-zine.
